" The Noble Experiment"

.Introduction

" The Noble Experiment" is a boardgame which has been developed within one semester at Fachhochschule Flensburg. Our team's challenge within this project was to develop a background story, produce the overall design, create the game's mechanics and finally balance it. While everyone in the team constantly worked on balancing the mechanics, my role was to draw the characters and the environment, and to produce the layout for the player cards. Finally, after having submitted our project we were allowed to exhibit it at the yearly internal Exhibition at FH Flensburg called “Rundgang”.

.Game

Inspired by the boardgame "La Cosa Nostra" and the dark atmosphere of the tv series "Gotham", the game's story takes place in New York's 20's during the probition. In several gamephases a player has to smuggle alcohol and other props in order to build up their own empire. Regulating authorities like the police, prohibition agents or gangster competitors who are constantly looking to weaken your position. Through fulfilling orders, running bars, brothels and casinos, and hiring gangsters the player has the ability to empower his position in the underworld. The goal of the game is to take over New York's gangster business, like Al Capone did at the time!

.Layout

With regards to the layout and overall design, it was a challenge to fit all the necessary information the player needs to succeed into a small amount of space. Player cards are the medium through which the player interacts mostly with the game, and it was crucial to divide provided information in horizontal segments. The developed icons on top of every card highlight the card's value, cost or the damage it causes. Every element was developed carefully with our story and the game's environment in mind so it fits together as a complete visual concept.
